CHAPTER TEN

THE MILF

Dom had to wait almost ten minutes before the door to the RV finally opened up and Alicia emerged. She was wearing a coat and had pulled her hair into a rough ponytail, and didn’t seem quite able to meet his eyes as she walked across the clearing to join him. He waited patiently and silently, figuring this was probably kind of nerve-wracking for her. He’d only picked up a few things about her in the few hours they’d known each other, but he imagined it had been a very long time since she’d been with anyone but her husband.

He still wasn’t sure how he felt about cheating if he was the one on the other end.

Dom decided he needed more information first.

“Thanks,” she said quietly as she accepted the blunt. She took a few experiment puffs on it, then coughed harshly, holding it out away from herself while she got herself back under control. “Fuck, I haven’t done this since college.”

“I don’t do it much myself,” Dom said. He felt vaguely awkward, unsure of what to say. He had to admit, between Anya and Grace and the others, his confidence had gone up a lot in the last week. But Alicia was different.

“I guess you wouldn’t, you seem kind of like a health nut,” she said, then winced slightly. “Not that that’s a bad thing.”

“I was more than I am now,” he replied. “I started slacking the past year or so.”

She took a few more puffs, then regarded the mostly dead blunt and sighed softly. “I’m being a terrible mother right now.”

“Why do you say that?” he asked.

“I’m doing drugs while leaving my children in the hands of strangers, surrounded by a world gone insane.”

“They’re good people,” Dom said. “None of us are going to do anything bad to your or your family. You’re safe with us.”

“And I can just take you at your word?” she asked. “This could be laced with something. I didn’t actually see any of you smoke.”

“Here,” Dom said, taking it back from her and taking a pull on it. “I understand. Trust has always been hard to come by. It’s a lot harder now. All I can really say is...I got your fishing rod for you, I gave you bullets you could’ve used against me, and still could, and you either trust people or you don’t.” He shrugged.

“I guess so,” she replied, accepting the blunt back. “Emily and Chloe seem really sweet. Anya and Grace seem really...self-assured.”

“Yeah, that’s pretty much my assessment,” Dom replied, and she laughed.

“Are you really, um, are you really sleeping with all of them?”

Dom chuckled nervously and felt his cheeks flush. He was glad it was dark out. “Yeah,” he replied. “I am.”

“Wow. That’s so crazy. Your girlfriend, or um, main girlfriend? I honestly don’t know. Anya. She was not so subtle about the fact that she wanted me to, uh, enjoy your company.”

“Do you want to?” he asked.

“Do you?” she replied.

“Oh yeah, definitely.” He paused. “Well. I mean.
